Jean Calvin-Thomas
One of the WGC longest serving members Jean Calvin-Thomas sadly passed way aged 96 years in April 2022. Jean served on the committee for a good number of years taking over the role of Secretary in 1997 which she carried on with until 2013 with most if not all of that time communications whether with Club Members or speakers was handwritten and sent by mail or phoned through! Many of us have happy memories of Jean and her consistent and energetic support of the Club over many years, It was only recently that due to failing health that Jean moved down to Devon to be near family. I gather she lived in Wallingford (Wantage Road) for most of her married life, supporting the town in many ways including her husband David as the Mayor of Wallingford. The bypass is proudly named after them, The Calvin Thomas Way. |

Whenever I met her at the club meetings or popping into her home, Jean was always welcoming and encouraging. especially in horticultural matters. Tim and Jill S It was always a joy to see Jean at the meetings and she was a dab-hand at making deliciously sumptuous strawberry tartlets for the Clubs' summer garden parties. Susan L I was very fond of Jean. She was one of my first contacts as a new member of WGC and always went out of her way to engage in conversation which always made me feel welcome. I missed her very much when she moved away and will miss knowing that she is there somewhere. Tony & Rosemary H / Shirley Dyer We have fond memories of Jean, she was such a lovely person. Cindy Z Sad news but a good age and a life well lived. Wallingfordians will have life long memories of Jean and David. |

Doug was a true gentleman. I knew him through my years with Wallingford Gardening Club. He was kind and very generous with his gardening knowledge. I have several plants in my garden that he gifted me, and they continue to flourish, especially the persicaria and will be a reminder of Doug. Susan L Doug was a lovely man and a gardener of the old school. Much knowledge given freely when asked but otherwise a man of few words and much understanding. He gave me a Persicaria which will be forever known as Doug’s plant. Janet P Doug was a quiet man who never wanted to put himself forward but could always be relied on to help out. He'd drop in on a Sunday morning in the autumn to bring the programme to print for the following year and tell me about the visits he'd arranged, and in the spring he'd calmly ferry all the plants that landed on his doorstep to the plant sale. He was always good-humoured and patient when a newbie like me joined the committee (many years ago) with lots of enthusiasm and not a clue about how things actually worked. He loved to make things grow. Janet H It was always a pleasure to meet Doug at Club events, he quietly made an outstanding contribution to the Club over many years. He spent much time researching and booking the speakers and the same for garden visits. Many healthy & vigorous plants grown by Doug & his brother in law for the plant sale every year made a significant contribution to the proceeds, helping to keep the Club afloat to this day. Thank you Doug. |
